I get asked lots of wedding photography related questions prior to, during, and after my clients’ weddings. Although my website has a dedicated ‘Frequently Asked Questions’ page, I decided to turn some of these questions into a blog post. Hopefully, this will be beneficial in highlighting any additional questions that would be great to share. In addition to these questions, shout out if there’s anything I haven’t yet covered here, or it is not detailed enough!
What is my style of wedding photography?
There are many different styles of wedding photography, such as traditional, photojournalistic, documentary, high fashion, fine art… the list goes on. I do a mixture of a couple of these styles. It depends on the individual or couple I am photographing, such as are they comfortable in front of the camera? Do they want more ‘posed’ images? It also depends on the location, event timings, lighting, number of guests etc., and also what I’m aiming to achieve. For weddings, I do a few ‘traditional’ group shots, but my work is largely documentary and candid. I believe a successful wedding album needs a mixture of all of this, and I should be adaptable enough to deliver a mix.
How far in advance should I book a session with you?
Booking your date for any photography session, especially your wedding, as early as possible guarantees you won’t face disappointment. Most clients book their wedding photographer at least 6-9 months in advance, some even further out. Mid-week is generally a little quieter as most of my sessions are at the weekends. As a result, book early!
Do you provide a Welcome Pack of any kind?
Absolutely! I have created a Wedding Welcome Pack for all my brides + grooms. This has been professionally designed and printed and is packed full of all the information you need, including a Wedding Welcome Guide, pricing packages, vendor recommendations, and lots of other useful details.
Do I provide albums with my sessions?
Yes! I can provide wedding or portrait albums depending on the package you have chosen. If you have a family portrait session and decide you’d like me to design and deliver an album, this can be added on later. All albums are custom designed to your wedding or portrait session, are clean, contemporary, and classy.
Do I offer wedding video or cinematography services?
I personally do not offer this service, but I can certainly recommend some fantastic vendors with whom I have worked with before. One such cinematography firm is Affinity Wedding Films. This husband and wife team create beautiful and creative wedding and event cinematography and I can highly recommend them for their professionalism and dedication to their art. A full list of all my preferred vendors are included in my Wedding Welcome Pack.
How many wedding pictures do I typically provide per wedding?
On average, for my full-day wedding photography, you will receive over 1000 digital images. This, of course, will vary from wedding to wedding and will depend on the conditions of the day (weather, time of ceremony etc.). I don’t tend to put a number on how many you will receive due to these factors. You can take a peek at my pricing pages for full details.
Do I edit all my images? How much editing is involved?
Yes, all my images are edited. I do not provide RAW images to any of my clients. The type of editing required depends on a number of factors, such as lighting, background, composition, details etc. For details of my editing style please check out my recent blog post.
Who owns the usage rights and copyright to my wedding images?
This is a question I get asked frequently. As the client, YOU own the full usage rights to you photographs for non-commercial use. In plain English, that means you can do whatever you want with your images (make your own album, take prints, send them to relatives, share them online etc.). The only restriction is you cannot re-sell these images. I own the copyright to them. You also can’t edit them at all. That includes not using filters when you share these via social media.
Are my photography packages negotiable, particularly weddings?
It’s expensive to get married. There are so many things you need to plan for. Please consider that it’s not just a case of me turning up to your ceremony and taking a few images. There’s a heap of admin involved, driving to locations to check the lighting and background before the session, the cost of marketing, equipment, and other resources, and then there’s the editing that comes with each photography session. For full-day wedding packages I could be working more than 20 hours to ensure you get the service from me you deserve. So the short answer is no, but you are welcome to try!
Why is wedding photography so expensive?
Ah, that age-old question. I probably asked this same question at some point in my life, and certainly my family do! There are so many reasons why we charge what we do for our services. I make a living out of photography. I only earn money when I am photographing. I don’t get paid for taking vacation or sick leave. My overheads are high; marketing, admin, accounting, legal, resources, camera equipment and maintenance…the list goes on. Therefore, I have to charge what I do in order to pay my bills!
What is your refund policy?
At the time of booking my services a non-refundable reservation deposit is required. This is generally 25% of the total fee and is applied towards the package total. If, for whatever reason, your event is cancelled and a new date is proposed and I am available, the money will be held for that date. If not, the reservation deposit will not be available to apply towards your final installment. Confused? Well don’t worry. These are all important items I run through during our initial consultation.
When and how will I receive my wedding photos?
Within 2-4 weeks of your wedding your photos will be sent to you. If you order an wedding album, this generally takes a little longer and I will advise you upon booking.
