I wanted to share my before + after, examples of edited photographs with you all. This is a vulnerable thing for me to do as a photographer, but I often get asked by clients ‘what corrections do you do to our images?’ or ‘why edit our images?’. Taking photographs is a small part of what I do. Administration, including editing and marketing, take up lots of my spare time during the day.
Every photoshoot is different. Therefore, editing images takes varying degrees of time, depending on what corrections are needed. I like my subjects to look natural and realistic, so I aim for my editing to be as minimal as possible.
Even with the right settings, photographers can’t always produce perfect photos. My style is light and airy, but I won’t overexpose my subject too much as you can never regain some of the original elements.
One thing I always do when photographing is ensure my settings are ‘shoot to RAW’.
WHY DO I ALWAYS SHOOT IN RAW?
Shooting in JPEG can result in loss of image information as the picture is compressed. With RAW, I am able to produce higher quality images making it easier to edit. I always edit in Lightroom and adjust basic settings such as exposure, vibrancy, contrast, and sharpening. Adding a little warmth to the images is necessary if they look a little cooler than I’d have liked straight from the camera. I also edit out any major distractions within the image that I may not have noticed during the session.
HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO EDIT AN IMAGE?
It’s hard to quantify how long it takes to edit a session as it depends on the package the client has purchased and the type of session. Weddings will always take longer due to the sheer amount of images taken on the day and distributed to the client. For my Signature Collection, it can still take anywhere between 2 – 6 hours to edit portraits or family photographs depending on the edits required.
Hopefully this will help you understand why photography sessions may cost more than you expect! It’s because I spend hours putting the final touches on all your images after the end of the session.
